Type: Interior / Hospitality
Status: Completed
Location: Thong Sala, Thailand
Year: 2004
Concept
A double-height restaurant organized around one shared table, where kitchen and gathering remain connected.
Hidden Interior
A quiet exterior gives way to a double-height dining room shaped by light, timber, and the intimacy of one shared table.
Project Narrative
A modest Thai building transformed into an intimate culinary room centered on one shared table.
DAO by Nir Mesika is a restaurant for chef Nir Mesika, recognized by
Michelin. The design centers on a long shared table inspired by the
Jewish tradition of the Shabbat table.
The existing two-story Thai building remains modest from the
outside, while inside it opens into a surprising double-height
space. The atmosphere combines Nir's culinary language with local
references and Japanese sensibilities.
DAO means star in Thai, and the main room uses precise lighting to
darken the high ceiling and create the feeling of dining under an
open sky. The kitchen and table remain connected, with no hard
separation between cooking and gathering.
